Strolls with Wildlife from Rain Forest to Coast Our leisurely paced Backroads adventure in Costa Rica is a naturally rich experience, from the inland Central Valley to the shores of the Nicoya Peninsula. Hike to a volcano and stroll through lush plantations. Meander through rain forests teeming with monkeys, butterflies and multicolored birds. Stride along white-sand beaches as toucans soar overhead and iguanas sun themselves nearby. View the landscape through the eyes of expert naturalists, whose insight enhances our understanding of Costa Rica’s diverse ecosystems. Evenings are about catching up on hammock time in our soothing tropical havens.

Itinerary & Departure Dates

Days 1 & 2 - Fortuna Meet in San José. Get aquainted with your new surroundings on a walk to a stunning jungle waterfall • Joined by a local naturalist, trek across a lava field in Arenal Volcano National Park • Venture into the rain forest, where the jaguar-like calls of howler monkeys can often be heard • Soak in the peaceful Tabacón Hot Springs

Days 3 & 4 - Monteverde Boat across Lake Arenal and travel into the high country of Monteverde • Take a guided walk through the renowned Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, where hummingbirds, quetzals and hundreds of species of orchids and ferns thrive • Explore the forest canopy on hanging walkways, visit a butterfly garden or view the art at a women's crafts cooperative
Days 5, 6 & 7 - Playa Tambor Journey across the Gulf of Nicoya by boat • Walk to a lookout point on the Pacific Coast for the best view of the tropical sunset • Hike a coastal trail through a dry lowland forest, stopping to explore tide pools and waterfalls • In the Curu Biological Preserve, enjoy a guided nature hike through the wildlife-rich sanctuary • Keep your eyes open for spider monkeys and macaws at the wildlife restoration project • At our seaside resort, take a siesta in a hammock while being lulled to sleep by the crashing waves • Return to San José on a scenic flight.
